In French, the word “Oenothèque” roughly translates to “Wine Library.” It’s a special word and, although it takes a little practice to pronounce it, we feel it’s completely perfect to describe who we are – wine lovers – and what we do – share delicious, distinctive, interesting wines with those who visit us. Tucked in the courtyard behind Porters Boutique Hotel in the heart of Havelock North, our collection of great wine experiences are created for you to escape from the world for a while, and allow us to share the pleasure, culture of our wine with you. Walking into our urban tasting room in the heart of Havelock North isn’t just about tasting wine. For us, a tasting is about more than just what we pour into your glass. It’s about sharing something we’re passionate about with you. It’s about creating an experience. After all, often our favourite wines are the ones we have good memories and stories around, aren’t they? The experiences are what make wines more meaningful. A stylish snug of interior design, you’ll feel as though you’ve just walked into a friend’s home. And we expertly create a tasting that’s an extension of that feeling. Welcome, comfortable and at your own pace. Our Oenotheque is also a ‘home away from home’ for celebrated producer Pyramid Valley from North Canterbury. Both Smith & Sheth and Pyramid Valley tastings are a seated affair, guided by one of our senior staff members. You’ll be taken through a flight of our beautiful wines and stories, tailored with as much or as little detail as you prefer. Our Heretaunga Studio is a space full of stories that becomes a portal through which we take you on a sensory journey. With your own personal sommelier and storyteller to guide you, you’ll be taken on an exploration of three New Zealand wine regions sampling limited production wines from our family of fine wine brands — Smith & Sheth CRU, Pyramid Valley and Lowburn Ferry. These wines become the vehicle for this adventure, and together we dive headfirst into the world of wine. It is a theatre. It is a barrel hall. It is Aotearoa like you’ve never experienced before. Wine Lounge
Like a chameleon changing its colour to match its environment, our Cellar Door transforms into a wine bar to suit the experience you seek. Our family of wine brands Smith & Sheth, Pyramid Valley and Lowburn Ferry are sit alongside a constantly changing wine list showcasing distinctive wines from distinctive regions—from Hawke’s Bay and around the world. You can enjoy these wines by the glass or half glass. Share a bottle with friends or to take away. The wine offerings, craft beers, alternative-alcoholic options and aperitifs are a taste of New Zealand and the world all in one place.
